MAR excursion to Pisa

The Smart-SWS team recently went on a field trip to Pisa to explore the research work of the University of Sant'Anna in the NEXUS-NESS project “Ecosystem Lab Coastal Tuscany” (a PRIMA project). The NEL Coastal Tuscany is located in Val di Cornia, where the river Cornia feeds the water supply of the southern plain up to the Mediterranean Sea. A MAR test site was established here as part of the project in order to put the new Italian MAR regulations (DM 100/2016) to the test. The infiltration basin was created together with the LIFE REWAT project and is flooded at times when the Cornia River exceeds the ecologically important minimum discharge in order to artificially recharge the groundwater.
